Psychological Support and Well-being Webinar - Part 1

Another knowledge-sharing activity among the partners of the Basketball-KTN project took place on March 17, 2025, with YSSUKRAINE hosting a synchronous online webinar dedicated to the mental well-being of young basketball players. This initiative is part of the network’s ongoing effort to exchange experiences, best practices, and expertise that contribute to the holistic development of athletes.

The session focused on the psychological challenges young athletes face and the crucial role of coaches, parents, and sports psychologists in providing effective support. Participants highlighted that competition-related stress, performance expectations, and social pressure can lead to burnout, anxiety, and emotional difficulties, affecting not only athletic performance but also personal growth.

Basketball, however, can be a powerful tool for mental balance, offering structure, security, and team support. The webinar emphasized the importance of creating a safe training environment, where mistakes are seen as part of learning and emotional stability is prioritized.

Coaches play a key role in shaping this environment through individualized guidance and trust-building, helping players manage stress and stay motivated. Parents also have a vital responsibility — to encourage, attend games, and avoid exerting unnecessary pressure that might undermine their children’s confidence.

Sports psychologists were highlighted as essential partners in helping athletes prepare mentally for competition, maintain focus under pressure, and recover from burnout. Techniques such as breathing exercises, visualization, and focus training were presented as effective tools for managing stress and enhancing performance.

A key takeaway from the session was that psychological approaches should be age-sensitive. Younger players benefit from learning through play and positive reinforcement, while older athletes need strategies for self-discipline and emotional regulation, essential for coping with the demands of high-level competition.

Overall, the webinar reinforced that supporting young athletes goes far beyond physical training. It also means fostering psychological resilience and helping them grow into confident, emotionally strong individuals.

Through initiatives like this, Basketball-KTN continues to prove that sports are not only about wins and scores — but also about education, empathy, and caring for the person behind the jersey.
