Basketball Training Approach for Young Athletes (ages 6–12)

On March 1, 2025, an online meeting of the Basketball-KTN partners took place as part of the project’s knowledge transfer activities, providing a valuable opportunity to exchange ideas and experiences on youth basketball training methodologies. With the participation of new clubs, the session began with a presentation of the project, its objectives, and the activities it promotes.

The central theme was the innovative training methodology developed by College Basketball in Borgomanero for children aged 6–12. This approach emphasizes a structured yet enjoyable and engaging learning environment, designed to make basketball fun, accessible, and developmentally effective.

Storytelling: A Child-Centered Start in Basketball

For younger children, storytelling plays a key role in helping them understand movement and space through play. Their first experience in the gym should be welcoming and engaging, so that they associate basketball with fun and exploration.

To achieve this, College Basketball coaches and assistants actively participate in games, not only as instructors but also as playing partners. This creates a natural learning environment where children develop skills through hands-on practice. The methodology also encourages children to continue practicing at home, extending their basketball experience beyond training sessions.

From Play to Skill Development

The training structure evolves gradually, starting with small-sided games and teamwork exercises. This way, children explore movement patterns and find solutions in real game situations. As they progress, motor education, coordination drills, and fundamental basketball skills are introduced, ensuring a holistic developmental process.

Maximizing Participation and Engagement

For College Basketball, playing is the best way to learn. Increasing the number of matches for children in the U9 to U11 categories is therefore a key priority. Beyond training sessions, organizing friendly matches and tournaments is considered essential to provide continuous and enjoyable playing experiences. This approach not only strengthens technical skills but also keeps young players motivated and enthusiastic.

Special attention is given to session planning, ensuring practices remain dynamic and uninterrupted. The aim is to eliminate long waiting times and static lines, maintaining a continuous flow of play. This way, each child can learn at their own pace, in an environment where mistakes are not punished but treated as a natural part of the learning process.

The ultimate goal is clear: to make basketball accessible, engaging, and educational, transforming the game into a complete learning experience.
